This unusua is all the more baffling in view of the facts that Mattanchery is one of the most thickly populated towns in the world and that the general sanitation of the place leaves much to be desired. In contradistinction to this state of affairs in Mattanchery, the conditions are reversed in the case of Kunnamkulam, a small town in the interior of Cochin State, which had a visitation of plague early in 1935.
